Families are complex systems. There are at least two different viewpoints on almost every topic, sometimes poles apart. Mix in parenting issues, teenagers, financial pressures and others, and life can become quite stressful or even oppressive. Add to that the generational ‘training’ each person has had through their own family upbringing and everything is set for fireworks to erupt at any time.
Counselling of families would vary depending on the specific needs, but could cover issues such as identifying the spoken and unspoken beliefs, assumptions and mottos, parenting issues, displaying of love/affection, boundaries, anger and how to manage/control it, leisure, possessions, finances, education, housework, understanding each others’ differences, and trust.
Much of our personal mental and emotional health (or ‘sickness’) is derived from our families. Parents owe it not only to themselves but also their children and their children’s children to provide an environment where every individual is nurtured and loved. An individual’s mental and emotional health begins at home. Don’t sell yourself, or your family short. Whatever the issues are, there is help and answers available. Time may well be of the essence though, don’t delay to seek help. It’s not a sign of weakness, it's in fact one of strength.
